Life skills are the skills we need to deal effectively with the challenges in everyday life, whether at school, at work or in our personal lives.

A definitive list is something educators, governments and employers continue to discuss. But no matter if you call them life skills, 21st century skills or soft skills, students who are able to understand and use these skills, along with their educational qualifications, will be better placed to take advantage of educational and employment opportunities.


The English Department #1 of the Russian University of Economics and Macmillan Education (UK) have organised an OPEN YOUR MIND! competition where we are encouraging university students of the 2-4th years to submit their own video stories about life skills and how they are being developed through their university studies.

The competition is open to groups of students (up to 7). Tutors are welcome to participate.

What are the prizes?

There will be one group winner. They will win:

•    printed copies of Open Mind, a ground-breaking adult course
•    a year-long access to world’s renowned English practice online resource
•    Macmillan and RUE diplomas

The 2 group runners up will win:

•    a year-long access to English practice online
•    Macmillan and RUE diplomas

How competition works:

•    The competition runs from 1 March 2015 until 20 May 2015
•    The total length of the video clip should be up to 5 minutes. The video clip should be submitted in MP4 format.
•    All entries must be submitted via email: office@macmillan.ru
•    From all submitted video clips, a panel of judges will select 3 most creative and original entries that reflect the main theme of the competition «Life Skills». Further assessment criteria are: Logics and arguments, English Language Input, Whole Team Involvement
•    The winners will be announced in June 2015.
•    All participants will receive a digital participation certificate at the end of the competition.
